ローリング・ストーンズの結成40周年の記念盤として、40曲を収録したコンピレーション・アルバム。デッカ/ロンドン時代とローリング・ストーンズ・レーベルの楽曲を一つの作品として集約したバンド史上初のオールタイム・ベスト・アルバムです。2枚組CDの1枚目はデッカ/ロンドン時代の曲、2枚目はローリング・ストーンズ・レーベル以降の16曲に加え、新曲4曲が収録されています。「Don’t Stop」はシングル・カットされ全英トップ75シングルチャートで36位、ビルボード・メインストリーム・ロック・トラック・チャートで21位を記録しています。新曲の中で唯一、Licks Tour でも演奏されました。

『Forty Licks』はジャケットの色を変え、収録曲を何曲か入れ替えたヴァージョン違いが数種類出ています。また2023年のミックの誕生日（7月26日）には初めてデジタルでリリースされ、ドルビーアトモスでの配信も始まりました。
