Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2)

『Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)』の続編といえる内容のベスト・ヒット・アルバム第二弾。「Jumpin’ Jack Flash」や「Honky Tonk Women」などストーンズを代表するシングル曲（アルバム未収録）を収録し、ストーンズの3年ぶりのアメリカ・ツアーに先駆けて発売されました。英米同じジャケットで同時に発売されましたが、収録曲の一部が異なります。

1964年のデビューEPに収録の「You Better Move On」や、1967年に米国で編集されたアルバム『Flowers』に収録の「Sittin’ on a Fence」、『Their Satanic Majesties Request』セッション中に録音されシングルでリリースされた「We Love You」の3曲は英国盤にのみ収められています。米国盤でしか聴けないのは1966年のシングル「Paint It, Black」。米国盤はヒット曲のみで構成し、本当の意味でのベスト・アルバムになっていますが、英国盤に比べて収録曲が1曲少ないです。

LPで発売されたアルバムは四隅を切り取られた八角形の変形ダブルジャケットで、内側にはブライアン追悼の一文が記載されました。ジョン・コッシュによるアルバム・カバーは、ガラス越しのストーンズのポートレートを使用。CDでは英米仕様とも紙ジャケットで八角形ジャケットを再現した再発がありました。
